We can’t stay one-person-shows forever!
When I went full-time as a designer last year, I was SO eager to make the leap. Doing your own thing for the first time is so exciting and empowering, you’re ready to dive in head-first! I absolutely devoured everything I could find on Pinterest, Instagram, and I scoured the whole internet to learn about marketing and what it takes to run a whole dang business. I was prepared to wear any hat I needed to at any given moment.
Then I found out that I am only one person and I can only be in one place at any given time.
I know. RUDE, right?
It felt like I could either choose to be a jack of all trades or a master of “one” for my business. Designing was the one thing I really wanted to do, and I found my time was getting sucked into social media, copywriting, and backend management in particular.
At that point, I hadn’t considered that I might be ready to outsource. In my first year going full-time in my business? Um...that’s a lil soon, isn’t it?
Then in December, I stumbled across the profile of a Virtual Assistant who could help me in those areas and thought, “Okay...dang! I might actually be ready for this!"
In January, I expanded my team to my Virtual Assistant, Kailyn, and in April, I’ll be bringing on my Pinterest Manager, Emma!
I can’t even express how beneficial hiring these two have already been, but I’m sure as heck going to try:
1. I get to focus on the designer stuff and trust them with the rest.
I mean, the dream!! These two take the tasks off my plate that used to pull me away from doing my thing. I hadn’t even realized how much was outsource-able in my business. Pinterest management, Instagram planning, copywriting, lead generation, file exports, client communication, stock image sourcing, drumming up ideas and strategies — all taken care of. It saves me so much time and energy, and seriously works wonders for my mental health.
2. My business has grown BIG TIME!
I’ve been able to form more connections and grow my leads and inquiries by outsourcing lead generation! My VA Kailyn takes care of Instagram planning, hashtag research, and post-optimization, which helps other accounts find me. I check Instagram now, and see messages from potential clients in my inbox! The way Kailyn described this to me once was a “set-spike situation in volleyball”, and I think that’s perfect: with her taking care of starting a connection, I can hop in and take it from there.
3. I have strategists and collaborators in my corner.
More brains > one! Outsourcing brings in specific expertise in the areas that used to have me feeling like a jack of all trades. I get to go to Kailyn and Emma with the brainstorms and bigger ideas, so we can strategize and streamline together. It’s the best.
Not to mention: if I need it, they make the best hype-women ever.
4. I can do more things I love with the people I love.
Since I’ve outsourced, I’ve been able to schedule in a LOT more time for my husband, family, travel, and creating for the heck of it. It has breathed so much value, worth, and love into the way I get to spend my free time in a way that I would have never thought possible in my first full-time year of business. This is the benefit that makes the return on investment so real. It’s priceless!
